Katie married Dencil Leo (Buck) Mattingly in 1940 in Indianapolis. Katie took care of their first two children, Judy and Steve, while Buck defended his country in World War II. Upon his return, they made their home in Indianapolis, adding two more daughters, Kathy and Carolyn, to the family. After Buck’s untimely death in 1957, Katie started life anew and moved westward. She lived for many years in California and Las Vegas.
She was an untiring caregiver to her youngest daughter, until Katie was in her nineties.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her son, Steven Wayne Mattingly, and her eleven siblings. She was our family’s historian and could retell family events with such humor. Her sweet laugh will be missed.
She is survived by three daughters; Judy Wilson and Carolyn Mattingly, both of Athens, Alabama and K.C. Fleming of Las Vegas, NV; Eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Of special note are two of her many nieces and nephews, Sue Patterson Tatangelo, Dan Patterson and his wife Linda of California, who brightened her days with their many acts of love.
