The family of Al Ross, 87, would like to lovingly express his transition into the Eternal on the afternoon of Thursday, August 30th, 2018. He passed in a medical facility in West Hills, California, quickly surrounded by his immediate family, who had been spending much quality time with him in his final days. We are grateful that we were able to show him all of our love and to receive his graciously in return.
Al was born on September 25th, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Nathan & May (Levy) Ross, immigrants from Russia and Poland. He had one older brother Irving. After high school he entered the army, participating in the Korean War, then on the G.I. Bill, graduated college in California and pursued an early career in accounting as a CPA in Van Nuys and Ventura, eventually getting into Real Estate Brokerage, and even teaching both fields at Ventura College and other southern California institutions. He also was an active member of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce, owned a restaurant for a few years, ran an Artist’s touring company, had part in the Management of Crown Records, and in his later years, had a lot of fun making various art and jewelry, much incorporating a beautiful medium called dichroic glass which he would glaze & bake from essential elements himself.
He had a passion for the outdoors, fishing, camping, and hiking, a central member of California’s chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. Also a big fan of music and the arts, Al was active in his youth as a drummer and drum major, was integral in the production of some early documentary films about the origins of the California Missions.
He was married to Marilyn Fromberg on September 14th, 1961, reaching nearly 60 years of a tender and beautiful life together.
He is survived by his immeasurably loving wife and partner in everything, Marilyn; children Cheri, Marc, Kim, Pam, and Lee; grandchildren, Lisa, Branden, Kyle, Ian, Ilene, Kevin, Chris, and Ben; his great-grandchildren, Sydnie, Levi, Logan, and Elliana; as well as all of their spouses, and many, many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews, and “greats”.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, 11:30am, at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura, CA 93003.
In lieu of flowers, our family asks that you donate to the group or charity of your choice, or simply to use of your time, to taking a breath, and loving each other like Al Ross loved life and all of us so very deeply...
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
