Ben was born February 3, 1933, in Fairbury, Nebraska, to Tolliver P. Black and Gladys Florence Ervin. He proudly served four years in the United States Navy. Over the years Ben enjoyed hiking and backpacking. But his most beloved hobby was fishing on the t-dock with his fishing buddies. In recent years he developed a passion for drawing and found out that he was rather good at it. He spent many hours perfecting beautiful landscapes for his friends and family to enjoy. Ben was also a member of the Church of the Living Christ in Ojai, and could be seen many faithfully serving as an usher on many a Sunday morning.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, six siblings, and his loving wife of 51 years; Mary Frances Black.
Ben is survived by his daughter, Debra Neely (Ken) of Ojai, Gary Holtz (Jeanine) of San Luis Obispo; sister, Kathrine Johnson of North Platte, Nebraska; brother, Cecil Black (Ann) of Redding. He is also survived by his granddaughter Emily Torres (Alfred); grandsons, Micheal Neely, Erik Holtz, and Evan Holtz.
He was very proud of his grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. His many nieces and nephews also enjoyed his witty sense of humor, as his laughter filled every room.
Ben was beloved by all that knew him. So for all that called him friend, uncle, brother, daddy and Papa; his memory will live on in their hearts.
Ben’s family would like to say a special thanks to his dear physician, Dr. Fred Fauvre and his staff for the many years they took care of him. Also thanks to the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Staff. Thank you also to Carol from Livingston Memorial for her help during a difficult time. Our hearts are full of gratitude to the loving staff at the Continuing Care Center of Ojai for the countless hours they took such wonderful care of our dear loved one.
