Betha Jean Johnston, passed away peacefully at her home in Ventura, Ca., Tuesday, October 30, 2018. She was 88.
Born in Calgary, Canada, December 9, 1929, the only daughter of Gerald H. and Irene Alice (Wait) Johnston. Betty was raised by her grandmother after the death of her mother in 1931. She spoke fondly of childhood memories, going to movies with brothers, Norman and Clint, family dinners, ice skating in winter, and summers filled with laughter.
Betha graduated from Crescent Heights HS (1946; studied at Calgary General Hospital, receiving her RN in 1951. Her first post was Catholic Hospital in Juneau, Alaska. Continuing her career in nursing she journeyed south; became a United States citizen (1957), and passed her California Boards (1958).
In due course, she settled in Ventura Ca. She accepted a position as surgical nurse at E. P. Foster Memorial Hospital (now Community Memorial Hospital), and in 1961 supervised the ER, Central supply and the Operating Room at the newly opened Santa Paula Hospital.
Not one to remain idle, she continued her education and traveled often. She eventually found a home base that suited her nicely - Ventura Marina Mobile Home Park at Ventura Harbor.
"Betts" was one of the first residents, and quickly became involved in the new community. With a passion for reading she created a lending library program. She also helped establish an emergency response group, organized the clubhouse kitchen, played Bridge, and always with time for neighbors.
In 1994, she retired from nursing and soon became a volunteer teacher's aide. She enjoyed reading, square dancing, Red Hatters, Gardening, Friends, Bridge, Tea, a bit of acting now and then - - and a cat named "Sable" her affectionate companion. For 54 years Betty was a familiar face in the community - with a lovely smile and a passion for life - - she is missed.
