Clarice L. Vervoorn

January 17, 1948June 27, 2014

Clarice Ludora Vervoorn, 66, of Ventura, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 27, 2014, at home surrounded by her family following a brave fight with cancer. She was born January 17, 1948, in Long Beach to James and Cornella Ruth. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother ("Nana"), Clarice took great joy in providing a loving home for her family. She especially treasured taking walks on the beach and riding bikes with her husband Tom. She and Tom met 51 years ago at Emma Wood State Beach. For Tom, it was love at first sight. Just five days after her 19th birthday they were married and one year later welcomed their first child into their lives. All three of her children recall fun family times at the beach, camping, playing games and just hanging out at home, where their friends were always welcome. Clarice had a way of making everyone feel at home. She was never short on smiles or hugs and her melodious laughter brought joy to those around her. She loved to sew and lovingly made clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. The family spent many happy times together in their mountain cabin at Shaver Lake. Clarice loved to swim and play and hunt for hidden treasures on the beach at Shaver. She organized these family trips and lent her special touch in the details of making sure that all of the provisions for a good time where included. Clarice and Tom enjoyed many wonderful trips to visit their children throughout the United States, as well as to the Holy Land in Israel. They also went on a mission trip together to Israel, serving the homeless in Tel-Aviv. Church members and friends enjoyed her company on cruises to Alaska and Mexico. Clarice and Tom are longtime members of Calvary Chapel in Oxnard where Clarice was a discussion leader of various women’s Bible study groups. She also spent many years involved in Bible Study Fellowship. Clarice will always be remembered for the kindness and love shown to all she met. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 1/2 years, Thomas H. Vervoorn of Ventura; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tonney Kaw-uh of Yorktown, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sheba Vervoorn of Prescott, Arizona; daughter and son-in-law, Tamie and Tracy Beach of Bishop, Califtornia; grandchildren, Bryce, Karese and Nathan Kaw-uh, Sonya, Emma and Luke Vervoorn, Ashlynn and Cyrus Beach; Brothers, Claude and Curtis Ruth, both of Hawaii; sisters, Cecilia Hill of Redding and Arline Anastasion of Washington; Sister-in-law, Julia Vervoorn Babcock of Ventura; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bert W. and Jan Vervoorn of Camarillo, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Clarice was also blessed with many wonderful friends who will miss her dearly. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, 3:30 PM, at Calvary Chapel, 1925 Eastman Avenue, Oxnard, with Pastor Lance Ralston officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Ministries of Calvary Chapel, Oxnard. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Two young newly wed couples-- just starting out on life in the spring of 1967 in a triplex on San Clemente Street in Ventura. This is where my husband Rick and I first met Clarice and Tom Vervoorn. Fond memories come to mind. Throughout the years, we shared in the events of starting our families, enjoying a family Shaver Lake vacation, and developing a special bond in Bible Study Fellowship and other Bible studies. Clarice's loving and caring nature and great love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus was always an inspiration to me. As was said in her memorial, she truly witnessed to others not only in words but in the way she loved her family, friends, and people. We miss you deeply, but rejoice in the fact that you are with God. Rick and Joy Aurella

I met Clarice on our trip to Israel. From then on, I realized that her & Tom had the type of marriage I have always hoped for...one clearly centered on Christ and one with such joy & love for one another. Every time I saw Clarice, she had a sweet smile and a big hug to offer! There would be times when she was in pain but she would never complain, instead she would ALWAYS ask, " Sweetie, how are you?" One time when we were walking on the beach together, she offered me some Godly advice and I realized not only was she filled with compassion & wisdom but with way more energy than me...an energy that Tom says she had until the very end. I will miss her dearly but I long for the day to be where she is now.....with Our Heavenly Father above. Prayers for God's peace & comfort to Tom & the entire family.

I adore Clarice. Every time I would see her she had that beautiful and comforting smile. No matter what she was going through she would always put others first. I first met her and Tom in Israel, what an awesome place to meet! And from the moment I met them, I felt like I have known them all my life! Their marriage had become an example for me. A marriage wholly focused on Jesus, so much so that love overflowed onto everyone around them. I had the honor of witnessing her storytelling , her laugh and her sweetness, but most of all her walk with The Lord. Clarice was and still is very dear to me. I will greatly miss her, but I know she is in the arms of our Savior. Love and prayers to Tom and her family.

We have had the pleasure of being Clarice's neighbor for the past eleven years. The love she displayed for her husband, kids, and grandchildren was admirable. We are so sad to see her leave, but so excited for her arrival in a much better place. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. We love you guys!

My wife and I had the privilege of knowing Clarice for many years and she was the sweetest person, full of life and love for Tom and their family. Her love for the Lord was evident in her life, family, community, and her church family at Calvary Chapel of Oxnard. I have often thought that the one Scripture that best described Clarice is found in 1 Peter 3:4 which says, "But let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God." She was precious to all who knew her, and especially to God. Clarice will be missed but not forgotten — for we have precious memories of this virtous lady who touched our hearts in so many ways over the years.
