My Dad (Oscar "Dale" Smith) considered him (and Dick Cowger) his best friend(s) growing up. Your entire family was so generous to us when we moved to Ventura in 1964. My deepest sympathies to the entire Griggs family. He was special.

Jim, Nancy, Gary and family,
I was saddened to learn about your father. I cannot mention him without mentioning your mother and grandmother (Bessie). They were the finest people anyone would ever meet. I have very fond memories of all of them growing up on Lewis Street in the Ventura Avenue area and later in East Ventura living a block away.I had a pleasant conversation with your father four years ago before I moved. May God give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Derrell was a great friend, and I was sorry to miss his Memorial but I am recovering for back biopsssi Harry L. Maynard

Derrell was my boss when I went to work with the County of Ventura Treasurer's Office in 1978.  We worked together until his retirement. I was given the privilege of coordinating his retirement party and I remember well the dinner we held for him at the Colonial House in Oxnard.  The place was packed with his friends of which there were obviously many.  We had the chance to play quite a few rounds of golf up at Soule Park and I know he loved the game.  I only saw Derrell a couple of times after his retirement, usually at retiree luncheons while I was still employed with the Retirement Department.  I will always remember him as a gentlemen and someone who always seemed to be in the best of spirits.  RIP.

Derrell and Helen were stalwarts of the First Christian Church.  Great examples for young parents to observe.  We enjoyed their friendship.

So sad to hear of Darrells passing.  We remember him from many years ago.  In fact Helen grew up on the same street I did, Lewis St., on the Avenue.  Please accept our sincere condolences to the family in the loss of this really fine man.

Derrell was a kind hearted man and always seemed to be such a happy person! Silly as it sounds, I was drinking a diet A&W the other day and smiled remembering it was a favorite of his. Our prayers go out to you.
