

age of 95 on May 9, 2014, at her home in Ventura, Calif. Dorothy Eleanor Abbott was
the sixth of eleven children born to Jameson Francis Abbott and Antoinette (Schreiber)
Abbott. She was born in the family home at 689 East 132nd Street, Bronx, New York,
on November 21, 1918.
After graduating in 1936 from James Monroe High School in the Bronx, Dorothy worked
for several years as a secretary at J.P. Morgan Bank and at Bankers Trust on Wall
Street in New York City. On April 12, 1942, Dorothy Eleanor Abbott and Franklyn
Lowery Delaney were married at Christ Episcopal Church in Lynbrook, Long Island, NY.
They were together for 62 years before his death in 2004. After her husband Frank
became the executive director of the Ventura County Tuberculosis and Health
Association in 1948, they moved with their young son to EI Rio, Calif., where the family
lived on a ranch for three years until moving to Ventura in 1951.
In 1957, Dorothy began working for Ventura College and then moved to a position with
the superintendent at the Ventura Unified School District's central office. In the early
1960's, while Balboa Junior High School was still under construction, she was asked by
the newly appointed principal to become his secretary and to assist in planning for
opening the school. Dorothy continued to work at the school until her retirement in
1982. While still working, she attended Ventura College in the evenings and received
her AA degree in 1963.
Dorothy engaged in and enjoyed many creative activities, including knitting and sewing,
photography and printing her color photographs, watercolor painting and sculpture.
During retirement, Dorothy enjoyed playing golf and traveling with her golfing friends,
and she continued to take a variety of art and sculpture courses at the college.
Dorothy Abbott Delaney is survived by her son, Robert Franklyn Delaney of Berkeley,
Calif., her brother Richard Joseph Abbott of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and many
nieces and nephews.
At Dorothy's request, there will be no memorial services.
