November 26, 1930-February 19, 2018
Betty decided that it was time to join her devoted husband Walt in their new heavenly home in the early morning hours of February 19, 2018. She had declined rapidly after a fall in early December resulted in a fractured hip. Betty was born in Exeter, Tulare County, California and spent her childhood on a ranch near Lindsay, CA.
Betty did what many women of her generation did. She managed the house and was identified as a "Housewife." She did her job well raising daughter Susan and son Bruce while participating in a wide range of community activities.
She was very active in the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) at the local and district levels in Tulare County. She served as President of the Divisadero Jr. High PTA and received an Honorary Service Award from the California PTA for her many years of devoted service to that organization. Along with husband Walt, she operated a Drop Point for the Visalia Senior Gleaners program and ran a voting preceint station out of the garage for many years.
Elizabeth weighed and measured babies with Tulare County's Well Baby Clinic and was politically active, serving as a volunteer for Congressman Cal Dooley (Hanford).
Betty and Walt were married on May 4, 1954 and are survived by children Susan Godina (Benny) of Oxnard, CA and Bruce Halen (Meredy) of San Jose. Grandchildren Nicole Smith (Abel) of Oxnard and Brandon Godina (Eli) of Oxnard. Great grandsons Abel Smith Jr. and Westin Walter are the apples of Grandma's spiritual eyes.
The family asks that any donations go to Alma Via of Camarillo, the wonderful organization that nurtured and cared for Betty and Walt in their last years. For additional details, contact Bruce. E-mail is [email protected].
Graveside services will be held at the Visalia Cemetery, 1:30 p.m., on Friday, March 23, 2018.
