A loving father and husband, Glywn was born on January 12, 1927, in Burbank, CA, to Glywn S. Chase, Sr. and Ruth Constance (Connolly) Chase. He grew up on the family farm in Oxnard, with his older sister Miriam and younger brother Morley. When he was age 11, Glywn’s family moved to Ojai where he attended Nordhoff High School. After graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army and entered active service in May 1945. In his spare time he earned an expert rating in marksmanship. As World War II came to an end, Glywn’s unit was shipped to Japan where he was involved in reconstruction activities during the post war occupation. He was greatly moved by the destruction of the cities in Japan, and also by the beauty of the country and its people.
After his honorable discharge, Glywn attended Claremont Men’s College and graduated with a degree in Business and Public Administration. While in college, he met his first wife Patricia Ann Hall. Married for 24 years, they raised three sons while Glywn worked for the family business, Chase Bros. Dairy, near Oxnard.
He greatly enjoyed working with his father and took his position as an employer very seriously, enjoying warm relationships with many of the employees. Glywn was active with the Dairy Institute of California, taking part in legislative and regulatory matters for the dairy and milk processing industry. He also filled a term as president of the American Independent Dairies Association, which monitored and acted on legislation and regulation on a national level.
An avid horseback rider, Glywn was an active member of the Rancheros Visitadores for over 30 years. He loved the genuineness and camaraderie of his fellow Picadores.
In 1976, Glywn married his love, his life companion and his “angel”, Heloisa Helena Fornari. Together they made their wonderful life in Ojai.
In retirement, Glywn loved gardening, woodworking and reading. As his health diminished, he never complained, always keeping a sense of humor. He had an ability to put others at ease in almost any situation, and showed deep insight and compassion for others. To many, he became known as “Mr. Fantastico”, as “Fantastico!” was his standard reply to those who asked how he was doing. Glywn took special delight in his relationships with sister Miriam, nephews Sam and Tomás, nieces Alison (Eric) Roberts, and Karen (Kevin) Farrington, and his three grandchildren. The family would like to thank his wife, Heloisa, and her sister, Rachel, for their constant, loving care of Glywn through the years.
Glywn is survived by his wife, Heloisa; his former wife, Patricia Bergen; his sons, Glywn Chase III, of Modesto, CA, Brandon Chase of Granbury, TX, and Jonathan (and Meryl) Chase of Camarillo, CA; his grandchildren MacKenna Chase of Tucson, AZ, Lauren Chase of Dallas, TX, and Kyler Chase of Camarillo, CA; and his sister Miriam Chase Wille of Ventura, CA.
Glywn was preceded in death by his parents, Glywn S. Chase, Sr., and Ruth Constance Chase; and his brother, H. Morley Chase.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV.org).
