Ida Ruth Curtis, matriarch of the Curtis family, was called home to be with our Lord and my dad on Sunday, June 28, 2015. She had a dream of meeting St. Peter at the Pearly Gates and asking him if he knew of Ralph Curtis, he replied, “he is one of my best gardeners. She asked, “were is he?” St. Peter replied, he’s over there.”
Some of the tributes of Ruth’s life were helping customers and attempting to help them in their lives. She loved the Sierras and nature, especially June Lake where she enjoyed camping and fishing. Ruth was very giving, caring and full of fun!
Things that made her outstanding and listing a few of the many, Ruth was the first woman President of Tri-County Nursery Association. She stayed long hours, wrapping plants and flowers to have them ready for pick up the next day. I always remember a line of people waiting for Ruth to wrap their plants and flowers so they could have the opportunity to talk to her. She was known and loved by many of people who were her customers of Mound Nursery. Our family bought the Nursery in 1944; it was a joy to our family to be a part of this.
Ruth volunteered her time as den mother of the local cub scouts. I can’t remember her ever losing her temper. She was a very thoughtful mother over many years. Ruth was a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren, always making holidays fun, full of activity and laughter. She was a wonderful and loving wife to my father. Ruth will be missed by numerous friends and customers in her lifetime. She touched many lives.
Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond L. and Karen Curtis, of Ventura; grandson, Richard L. Curtis, of Pittsburg, California; granddaughter, Victoria K. Curtis; great granddaughter, Elisha C. Curtis (Lisa), of Ventura; nieces, Eileen Vaughn and Elinore Mangrum, of Galt, California; nephew, Jim Jett, of College Station, Texas.
Thanks to all the assistants that helped in the latter part of Ruth’s life. Some of those were caregivers who went above and beyond their call of duty in caring for her, they loved and cared for her as a family member. Also, to The Reverend Leonard DeWitt, who officiated the private family graveside service at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park. She was laid to rest alongside my father, Joseph Ralph Curtis. Ruth will be missed so much by her grandchildren, great granddaughter and daughter-in-law.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
