Janet E Pregent

Janet Elizabeth Pregent (86) passed away peacefully on February 11, 2014 in Ventura, CA. Jan was born to Lorraine and Walter Horkan in Wisconsin. She shared many fond memories of her time in Wisconsin. She loved to ice skate, play basketball and enjoyed dancing. In 1947 she married Robert Pregent and several years later adopted their only daughter Tonia. In 1964, they moved to California when Bob received a promotion with Mayfair Market. Jan then began her career in insurance, which lasted 35 years until her retirement. She was with Crump Insurance for 21 of those years and not only did she come to know Ventura quite well but many came to know her personally as well. Sadly Bob passed away in 1982 and it was a difficult adjustment but Jan met Harold Meyer of Oxnard, California and with both being widowed, they enjoyed many trips in their motor home, visiting the National Parks, going back to Wisconsin and North Dakota for family reunions, and weekend getaways with many Elks Club friends. For almost twenty years, Jan and Harold spent many happy times together. "On the Road Again" became their favorite song. During this time she became the "adopted Grandma and Step-Mom" to all of Harold's family and even more so after his passing in 2001. She came to consider his 4 boys, the sons she never had. Jan was very active at Poinsettia Gardens where she enjoyed playing bridge, dominos and swimming with her many friends. She also was involved with the Catholic Charities food pantry, where she volunteered for many years until her health began to decline. Jan was a sweet and faithful woman. She loved people, she loved life, and was kind and generous to all. She was always taking gifts to her friends in the hospital or sending someone a kind word. Jan will be dearly missed by all who knew her, friends and family alike. She is survived by her daughter Tonia Pregent Garrett, grandchildren Joshua (wife Bea), Reanna Hall (husband Gavin), and Jessica Garrett (husband Eric) and 8 great-grandchildren, Kurt Meyer (wife Laurie), Brian Meyer (wife Kathy), Scott Meyer (wife Monica-deceased), Jeff Meyer (wife Janice), and 7 Meyer grandchildren. Jan was one of the first 1200 members at the little wooden Sacred Heart Chapel so it is fitting that a memorial mass for her will be held on Saturday February 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 10800 Henderson Road, Ventura, CA 93004, with the Father John Vogel officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jan's memory to Catholic Charities, Ventura Community Service Center.
