

Longtime Ventura resident, John Robert McConica, passed on September 19, 2014, in Cold Spring, Kentucky, after living 97 happy and productive years. John was born December 5, 1916, in Luseland, Saskatchewan, Canada to John Banker and Helen Jane Williams McConica.
His survivors include his beloved wife Anne McConica of Cold Spring, Kentucky; sons John Jr. and wife Gayley, Tom and wife Denise, all of Ventura. He was preceded in death by his first beloved wife Geraldine Johnson McConica, on August 28, 2000, the mother of John Jr. and Tom.
Other survivors include granddaughter, Sarah Gayley Archer with great grandchildren Conlan Archer and Rylan Archer, all of the Santa Ynez Valley; granddaughter, Kathryn Denise McConica of Alameda. John's younger brother and longtime business partner, Charles B. McConica, and his wife Rosena of Saticoy.
John arrived in Ventura in 1929 when his father, the late James Banker McConica, opened a Shell service station and GMC truck dealership on the corner of Evergreen Drive and East Main Street in Ventura. Prior to the Second World War John worked at the local Bank of Italy in Ventura, later the Bank of America. In 1938 the car agency moved to the intersection of Seward Avenue and Thompson Boulevard. John was a Sergeant in the U. S. Army and served at Pearl Harbor shortly after the December 7th attack in 1941. John and his brother Charles began work at the dealership after the war, McConica Motors Inc. With Pontiac and Buick franchises added, the dealership became a mid-town Ventura fixture and remained such until sale of the dealership in 2004. John also became involved in other businesses where he excelled, including developing farming property.
John was a Trustee at Community Presbyterian Church and was active in many community clubs including the Rotary Club of Ventura, where he was a member since 1949 and a Past President, Channel Islands Masonic Lodge, The Scottish Rite and the Shriner fraternities. He was an avid and longtime member of the Saticoy Country Club where he enjoyed golf with friends. He supported numerous local charities. John pursued international travel and adventures with family for decades.
John loved life and was loved by all that knew him in both his California and Kentucky homes.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 18, 2014, 10:00 AM, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura with The Reverend Wayne Kempton of Community Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial has taken place in the family plot at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ventura County Museum of History and Art.
