

Joseph Verrett, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 7, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Joseph was born on March 8, 1922, to Joseph and Mary Verrett of New Orleans, Louisiana; he was the second youngest son of seven brothers and three sisters.
Joseph served four years in the United States Army and was awarded several medals for the American Theater Campaign, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged.
Joseph met and married “the love of his life,” Naomi, in 1942. She preceded him in death in 1977. He was a loving husband, father, and a devoted Deacon. Joseph worked as a master builder, part of Verrett Construction and also independent of the company. He retired from Port Hueneme C.B.C. Naval Base as a locksmith in December 1983.
Joseph is survived by his sons, Joseph Verrett, III (Nell) of Elk Grove, CA, Michael Verrett (Brandee) of Pasadena, CA and was preceded in death by his son, Raymond Verrett of Chicago, IL, in 2008; also survived by daughters, Irlene Wesley (John) of Palmdale, CA and Deborah Gutierrez of Oxnard, CA; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; sister, Jacqueline Johnson of Long Beach, CA; sister-in-law, Ira Mae Verrett of Oxnard; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He will be truly missed.
Visitation will take place Friday, March 29, from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
Service will take place Saturday, March 30, 11:00 A.M. at Evangelistic Missionary Baptist Church, 125 East Pearl Street, Port Hueneme, with The Reverend Torrence K. Nivens officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, with military honors rendered by the United States Army.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.
