Lester “Red” Smith, 84, of Ventura, died Saturday, September 11, 2010, following a brief illness. He was born February 25, 1926 in Milford, Illinois to Edward and Sarah Smith, and had been a Ventura County resident 60 years, coming from Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Smith; and son, Lawrence Smith.
Red had been a machinist for the United States Navy, retiring in April 1981 after more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed coin collecting and dancing.
Red is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Dolores Smith, of Grand Junction, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Teresa Smith, of Palm City, Florida, and Lois Madden, of Ventura; grandchildren, Jennifer Abelt and her husband, Aaron, of Ventura, Stacy Alvary, and her husband, Robert, of Ventura, and Sarah Taylor, and her husband, Shea, of Idaho; great-grandchildren, Gavin Mairena, Caleb Alvary, Tila Alvary, Isaac Alvary, Cyrus Taylor, Xander Taylor, and Aiden Abelt; close friend, Mickey Mobely, of Ventura; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
At Red’s request, no services will be held.
