Les was born June 28, 1929 to Frances Martha (Feyma) Vork and Quirinus “Harold” Vork at home on Poli Street, Ventura California, in the days when it was not yet typical to give birth in a hospital.
Lester’s wife Juanita “Jenny” Vork preceded him in death in 2007; as well as his sister, Betty Brobiski, and brother Don Vork. He is survived by three children: Karen Mendoza, Denise Walters, and Mark Vork and four wonderful grandchildren. Les leaves dear friends and family members, including sister Geraldine “Gerry” Hair and brother Jim Vork.
Lester was an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America in the 1930’s and 40’s and he advanced to the rank of Life Scout in 1945, learning valuable life skills along the way. Lester graduated from Nordhoff High School in 1948, where he made life-long friends.
He was always counted on to do his duty wherever duty called and proudly served a four year stint in the Air Force as a plane mechanic right out of high school. Les’ work life spanned 34 years with Shell Oil Company, working his way up from RoustAbout to Head Well Puller to “Pumper” (Well Monitor). Most of all he will be remembered for being an avid gardener, and a wonderfully generous and thoughtful father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, and friend.
Family members thank the care managers at Aegis of Ventura, for all the caring moments afforded to Lester as he moved through the stages of dementia requiring memory care and also thank Livingston Hospice for the dignity and pain management given during his final days in hospice comfort care.
Services will be held Friday, December 17th, 11:00 A.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura, CA 93003, with The Reverend Dan Hull officiating.
