Mary Ambrose

October 21, 1916November 22, 2012

Mary Rosenboom Ambrose, 96, of Ojai, died following a brief illness on Thursday, November 22, 2012. She was born on October 21, 1916 in the township of West Des Moines, Iowa where her parents homesteaded after emigrating from the Netherlands. After starting a family, she worked at Wineman’s Department Store and the Bechtel Corporation. She enjoyed caring for her home, garden, and extended family. She hosted most family holidays at her home in Downey, CA. never tiring of the preparation, cooking, and cleaning that came along with such large events. Many will remember her homemade chicken noodles, ice cream, and cheese pies. A strong, independent woman, she drove accident-free until her 90th birthday; after that she walked to her weekly hair appointment. She was always there in times of need for her children and grandchildren. A firm believer in the benefits of a university education, she encouraged and supported two of her grandchildren as they became the first members of her family to attain university degrees. Mary was preceded in death by her first husband of 40 years, Peter Barber, in 1979, and her second husband of 12 years, Louis Ambrose, in 1998. She is survived by her children Richard Barber of Cerritos, Ca., Diane Cunningham of Cherry Valley, Ca., and Kathleen Hart of Buena Park, Ca.; grandchildren Stephanie Gustafson, Jennifer Bonita, Natalie Cunningham, John Barber, Ray Barber, Jim Barber, Ron Barber, Jeffery Hart, Laura Snyder, and Greg Hart; step-grandchildren Anthony and Nicholas D’Alessandro; seventeen great grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren; and her sister, Wilhelmina Van Dermiden. A graveside service will be held on March 9, 2013, 10:00 A.M. at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Wittier, California. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at
