

Matthew passed away peacefully at home August 2, 2014 after a long battle with cancer with his loving son, Tom at his side. He also left behind, his wife Leslie of 36 years, and his youngest son John.
He is also survived by his parents, Mary Thomas and Oscar Stevens, and his sister Ginger Hughes, many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, outlaws and friends.
Matthew was born November 27, 1950 in San Diego and moved to Ventura in 1963. He volunteered for the draft in 1968 and served his tour of duty in Vietnam from 1969-1970. He was attached to B Company 523rd Signal Battalion and the 196 infantry brigade. He was a proud American and true patriot.
Matthew as very gifted and had many talents and interests. After returning home from the military he hitchhiked and jumped trains, never knowing where he’d end up, and came home with many stories about his adventures. He had a great love for music from the 1960’s and played his guitar and sang in tune with his beautiful deep voice. He and Leslie built and sewed a 20’ Cheyenne style tipi which they lived in for 2 years on the Rio Grand River in New Mexico. The family enjoyed many vacations in it. He made beautiful carvings out of wood and Meerschaum, and was a accomplished in the art of calligraphy. He loved old cars and riding his Harley with friends. He was a life member in the NRA second amendment task force.
Matthew worked for the Dia-Log Co. for 16 years and was well known in the Oil Field where he had a reputation as the best of the best, which earned him a promotion to District Manager. He retired in 1996.
The family wants thank Dr. Benjamin Lish who took care of Matthew. He was so kind and understanding, and was more than his doctor, he was a friend who helped out above and beyond through this difficult time.
Matthew was a very special man. He had an infectious laugh and a twinkle in his eye. We all miss you and love you dearly. You will forever remain in our hearts. Mathew will be inurned at the Bakersfield National Cemetery at a later date.
