Mildred May GRUNDER-BLACKWELL
December 13, 1921 – January 6, 2019
It is with saddened hearts we announce that Mildred May Grunder-Blackwell passed away in her sleep in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 6, 2019. Millie, as she was known, was born on December 13, 1921, to William C. Pictor and Ida Mae Pictor, in Gary, Indiana. Her parents owned a grocery store where she and her brother Dick both worked as they were growing up. She joined the U.S. Navy as a bookkeeper stationed at Treasure Island in San Francisco during WWII. After the war, she decided to settle in California and made Ventura her home. Millie was married twice and widowed for 16 years before meeting and marrying Nathen Blackwell on February 24, 2001.
She is survived by her husband Nathen, and his daughter Gaye Berger; her son James Schwetz and his wife Laura; her stepson William Grunder and his wife Roseanne.
Millie was loved by everyone she met and was known for her witty sense of humor and beautiful smile that would light up a room. Millie and Nathen enjoyed ballroom dancing and belonged to the Ventura Jubilee Fellowship Church. Where ever she and Nathen went, they wore color coordinated outfits. People would stop and comment on how cute they were.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, 2:00 pm, at Santa Barbara Cemetery, 901 Channel Drive, Santa Barbara, California, with the Reverend Dr. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
