Robert was born in Auburn, California on April 21, 1925, a lifelong resident of California. His family soon moved to Pasadena, where he graduated John Muir High School, 1941. Robert joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, but his blood pressure was found too high for air service. He then entered the tank corps, where he commanded a tank in Italy and France and later the Philippine Islands.
Mustering out in 1946, Robert returned to Pasadena, enrolling in the
University of Southern California. In 1950, he graduated with a degree in business administration, while serving in the Army Reserves. He later completed his master’s in education at USC as well.
Robert then began his lifelong passion for Elementary education. He first taught at schools in Pasadena and not long after began his career as an administrator. Robert quickly became the Principal at Hillside Elementary.
He then moved his family to Placerville, where he became superintendent of two school districts at the same time, Buckeye Union in Shingle Springs and El Dorado Hills School District. Although time consuming, it was done in an effort to save these cash starved districts money. Robert longed to return to Southern California and took a job at Ocean View School District in Oxnard, where he retired in 1993. He was a resident of Ventura from 1975 until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wm. Bradley Allen, daughter, Linda (Allen) Williams and eldest son, James W. Allen.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Beverly J. (Wilson) Allen, of Ventura; daughters, Cheryl (Allen) Akel and Robin (Allen) Wiley (husband, John Wiley), both of Sacramento; and son, John R. Allen of Ventura; as well as six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Roberts’s great love was his family. He treasured the many camping and water skiing trips with his family. After retiring, he became a Master Gardener with the County of Ventura and his own home. His gardens were always beautiful, filled inside and out with the many plants and flowers he grew so well. He also loved his birds and built them an aviary.
“Words cannot express how much we miss him, but he is now in the Master's care with our Lord and we shall see him again.”
A Memorial Service celebrating Robert’s life will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2014, 11:00 am, at the Ventura Baptist Church, 5415 Ralston Street, Ventura, with The Reverend Dr. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be left at TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
