He enlisted into the Navy in October 1940, serving first as a machinist’s mate salvaging sunken ships in Pearl Harbor, and later becoming a Naval Aviator, flying dive bombers from Norfolk, VA. to the USS Valley Forge. He was released to inactive duty in 1947. He was recalled into the Navy in 1953, serving with Fighter Squadron 123 and 143 during the Korean War.
Robert graduated from UCLA and the College of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons with a D.O. degree and later an M.D. degree. He opened a general medicine practice in Port Hueneme and built a home on Silver Strand beach in 1963. He finished a residency in Pathology at Wadsworth V.A. Hospital, Los Angeles, after completing his board certifications in Pathology plus three sub specialty boards in Pathology. He ran the laboratory at Oxnard Community Hospital until it closed in 1988. Robert then worked for the St. John’s Hospital Pathology group until retiring at age 88.
Robert was a member of the California Masonic Lodge for over fifty years.
Robert is survived by his wife Donna, of 37 years; three daughters Shannon Jordan-Burger, Stephanie Stichler and Robin Gallagher and four grandchildren, Ella, Cameryn, Ava and Jordan.
On Friday, April 8, 2016, Robert died peacefully at home and his last recorded comment, true to his love of aviation was, “Thank you all; it’s been a good run.”
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 15, 2016, 10:00 A.M. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura with The Reverend Dan Hull officiating.
