Ruth (Evans) Schneider went to be with Jesus on September 26, 2016 at the Californian Convalescent Hospital in Ventura. She was ninety. Ruth was born in Stockton, California on August 19, 1926. When Ruth was a young child, the family lived in Hollywood where, at the tender age of two, Ruth was chosen for her good looks and pleasant personality to be in the movies. Ruth's father George 'Doc' Evans, was a chiropractor to some well known actors and actresses, including May West. Ruth remembered her parents being very creative during the depression to make ends meet. Doc would often bring home produce or a live chicken as barter for his chiropractic services. Her mother, Myrtle Evans, bought and resold baked goods in a small storefront under the apartment in which they lived near Hollywood and Vine.
When Ruth was a teenager, she learned to use the stenography machine. She was an excellent stenographer and her goal was to work as a court reporter someday. That changed when she got the opportunity to work for Walt Disney at the Disney studios in Burbank. She would sit in the projection room with 'Walt' and the movie directors to take notes of their conversations on her machine while they viewed movies in the dark. She lost her job, however, due to low seniority when the studios became unionized.
Ruth began working at the Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles where she met her husband to be, Fred Schneider, who was on a sales call for his father's medical supply company. Fred and Ruth were married on December 3, 1950. They settled first in Simi Valley. Then, in 1959, moved to Ventura, where they built a home and raised their six children: Karen (Garrett), Kris (Ragsdale), Joyce (Saunders), Diane (Naylor), Wendy (Casteneda), and Frederick John III. Ruth's husband, Fred, went to be with the Lord on October 27, 2004, at the age of 84. Ruth is survived by her six children, twenty one grandchildren, and at least thirty great grand children.
An informal outdoor memorial service will be held at the Californian (4020 Loma Vista Rd) at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 8. Pastor Leonard DeWitt, longtime friend of the family, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Charles Carroll Funeral Home.
