Sheila Callison-Hoffman, 73, of Ventura, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2013, following an eight-month battle with cancer. She was born on May 9, 1940, in Lakeview, Oregon, to Bill and Margaret (Hansen) Rogers. Sheila moved to Jackson, CA, as a young child, and later to Lodi, CA, where she graduated high school. She met and married James K. Callison soon after graduation. Together they moved to Ohio where the family grew with the addition of three children. Sheila and family relocated to Simi Valley, CA, in 1972. Sheila and Jim divorced in 1981. Sheila was graduated summa cum laude from California State University, Northridge, and later married LaVern Hoffman in June of 1983.
She was employed by the County of Ventura as the county archaeologist, specializing in California Native American (Chumash) studies between 1974 and 1981. She later conducted archaeological studies in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Sheila also served on local historical preservation boards and societies. She loved to be up-to-date on world events. Sheila was an avid homemaker, delighting in preparing wholesome and gourmet meals. She was the most understanding, ethical, compassionate person one could know; devoted to her family, home and pets. Sheila enjoyed activities like sewing, knitting, and thrifting. Antiques were her specialty.
