Sydney “Whitey” Whitehead, 88, passed away peacefully at home in Ventura on Thursday, July 8, 2010.
He was born on November 10, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York and had been a resident of Ventura for seven years after moving from Malibu.
Whitey graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he joined the Marine Corps and was a fighter pilot in WWII and the Korean War. After the war he moved to California where he had a long career in the heating and air conditioning business, ultimately owning and operating his own firm. After retiring in 1994 his son, David took over the family business.
Whitey was an avid golfer and loved the game. He enjoyed time with his family, games, betting on the ponies, fishing and boating.
Whitey is survived by his son, David Whitehead; daughter, Mary Beth Vaughan; stepsons: Wayne and Scott Roten; stepdaughter, Shelly Roten; 7 grandchildren and 7 ½ great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Charles Carroll Funeral Home, 15 Teloma Dr., Ventura. 642-8134. Interment will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
