Twain was born in Muncy, Pennsylvania on May 13, 1925. He moved to California in 1933 with his widowed mother via a 1931 Oldsmobile, just in time for the Long Beach earthquake. Except for time in the military and at school, he lived the rest of his life in Southern California. He joined the Navy at 17 and was assigned to a troop transport ship, LCI 617, patrolling the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the Navy, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry Management from Oregon State University. He chanced to become involved with Toast Masters which lead him to a lifelong career in the sales of building materials.
Twain was raised in a Christian home that valued love, hard work, compassion and integrity. He imparted those same values to his cherished family. Twain was passionate about sports and played racquetball and golf well into his 80’s. He liked working with wood and built many pieces of furniture his family uses today. He traveled extensively with family and friends across the USA, Europe and New Zealand. The true spices of his life were the friends he held close during his lifetime. And, yes, Twain, was named after Mark Twain whom his grandfather knew and admired. It became a family tradition to pass those names down to successive generations.
Twain loved two women in his life, Doris and Jean. He lost Doris after 25 years of marriage. He is survived by Jean, his second wife of 34 years. Twain is also survived by his children Melanie Markley (Vern) and Mark Brewer, his grandson Brant Markley, his step children Lesa Taunton (Dale), Shelli Darrah, Dale Dotson (Kathy) and Lynn Boyd (Tracy), and 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. His strength, honor, patience and sense of humor will be sorely missed by all.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Friday September 23, 2011at the Evangelical Free Church, 2315 Ventura Blvd. Camarillo. Pastor James Larson officiating.
