She was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, and immigrated to Montreal about 55 years ago where she worked as a legal secretary for 30 years at the firm Kaufman, Respitz. She lived quietly on Nun's Island, enjoying the seasons overlooking the St Lawrence river and the company of a succession of pet cats. Vera enthusiastically enjoyed outings with the Montreal Field Naturalists' Club and participated in the "Busy Bees" group of the Westmount Contactivity Centre. She also enjoyed winter sports with friends. She was a dedicated long-time volunteer at Christ Church Cathedral where she hosted a monthly Sunday lunch table, arranged altar flowers, served as a steward, and maintained a lively and steadfast interest in church music and in community service. Vera supported Chez Doris Women's Centre and the Old Brewery Mission. She was the only child of the late Elizabeth Burns and William Burt, and leaves cousins in Britain, Ireland, and Switzerland.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, February 17 at Christ Church Cathedral, 635 Ste Catherine West, Montreal. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Chez Doris (514 927-2431 local 461 or contact [email protected]).
