It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Hamalock at the age of 70.
Growing up in the Cora Brown subdivision, Doug and his friends kept busy by creating cities in the sandpile, skating on the rink his dad built, swimming in the small pool and building tree forts. Mowing the lawn was fun, as he had a ride-on lawn mower.
Having his dad’s workshop and tools available, he rebuilt bikes, go karts, and eventually several cars. With his stripped down dune buggy he created a circuit around the yard and eventually took this down to Iona Beach and drove the low-tide sands.
He attended Duncan McDonald School and Sea Island School, before going to Cambie Junior High, and later Richmond Senior High. There are tales to be told about his academic life.
Doug was a very easy-going guy, considering he had 3 older sisters, who may have spoiled him. He had a terrific sense of humour and an infectious laugh. He was also very kind and a wonderful friend.
He became a truck driver in 1975 and worked for a couple of different outfits over the years, including Triple West – where he was known as ‘Swish’. He always said trucking was just a temporary job until he found something better. But he kept on trucking and retired in 2019 after 44 years! Again there are many tales of his trucking career, such as hauling snow to Whistler during the Olympics.
He was married to Monika (Dueck) on November 6, 1982 and they resided in Brookswood and welcomed their first son Andy (1984,) they moved to Murrayville where they welcomed 2 more children- Angela (1987) and Rob (1990). They raised their family here for many years before moving to Aldergrove in 2002. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father and worked hard to provide a wonderful life for his family.
After his wife Monika passed he reconnected with his highschool girlfriend Janice and moved to Vernon, where they built a beautiful home and life together enjoying the okanagan sunshine!
Doug had a passion for mechanics and owned many muscle cars over the years, a passion he got from his father and passed on to his son Andy.
Doug was also a blood donor having given blood over 50 times and planned to be an organ donor too.
He was predeceased by his parents Jim (2011) and Bessie Hamalock (2005), his late wife Monika (2019) and youngest son Rob (2021).
He is survived by his wife Janice, son Andy (Laura), daughter Angela (Jordan), and 7 grandchildren – Mya (Matthew), Jaxon, Alivia, Hudson, Zoey, Thomas & Connor. As well as step-son Cole (Heather) & James; step-daughter Brittany; his ‘favourite sisters’, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces; his In- Laws Hemlut & Anna Dueck; and grand dog Henry.
Doug was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His smile and laugh will be missed.
As he frequently said, ‘it is what it is!”.
