OBITUARY

Edyth Emily Volker

March 16, 1930 - January 4, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edyth Emily Volker, born March 16, 1930 in Vancouver, BC to Albert Alfons Soderman and Violet Soderman and who passed away peacefully at Noric House, Vernon, BC on January 4, 2021.

She is survived by her son Craig, her brother Bill and her sisters Grace and June.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband George, her son Brian, and her brothers Herbert and Robert.

Edyth spent her early years in Honeymoon Bay, BC, but was diagnosed with Tuberculosis at age 7 and spent the next ten years in Queen Alexander Sanatorium in Mill Bay, BC.

Her early jobs were in the cookhouse and then as a paymaster in logging camps on Vancouver Island. It was there that she learned how to drive – in a logging truck on the side of a mountain!

Subsequently she worked as an administrative assistant in a law firm and also for Butler Brothers in Victoria, BC.

She met her husband George and was married in 1957. George was in the Royal Canadian Navy and was often away at sea for several months at a time, so Edyth ran the farm in East Sooke and raised her two sons along with numerous farm animals and tended fruit, vegetable and flower gardens.

It was on the farm one day that she broke her leg in a pasture and had to crawl back to the farmhouse to telephone a neighbour for help. This was to be just one of many examples of adversity that she overcame in her lifetime.

When George retired the family moved to Salmon Arm where Edyth worked for Laird Construction and also held several positions with the Provincial Government. She was a life-long learner and received her GED in 1981 – something that she was very proud of.

Edyth made a point of getting to know people wherever she was. One couldn’t accompany her anywhere and not be amazed at all the people she knew, names remembered, and all of those people that remembered her in return. Her friends and family meant everything to her.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Brett Poulin and everyone at Noric House for their compassionate care of Edyth. They would also like to thank Loraine Kasper for her kind support of both Edyth and George for many years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Children’s Hospital.
