After a long and full life, Bert went to be with The Lord February 3, 2025, at 101 years old. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Reg Schweb (Trish), daughters, Evelyn MacKay, Lorna Erickson (Richard), Bonnie Lancaster (Jeff), and Deanne Schweb, thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, brother Jesse Schweb (Arleigh), and sister Olive Young. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Stella (Dolly) Schweb, his son, Dale Schweb, brothers, Ernie Schweb and Archie Schweb, and sister, Winnie Lunzmann.
Bert was born in Salmon River Valley, in a log cabin, to Walter and Olive Schweb. He grew up the eldest of three brothers and two sisters. Bert was conscripted to the army in 1943 and served for two years. He married Dolly Hoffman in 1949. Together they raised six children and made their living farming and ranching in Salmon River Valley, Coldstream, and Lumby. The farm was a wonderful place for his family to grow up.
An avid reader, Bert continued to learn many new things throughout his lifetime. He was a very content man, and didn’t need a lot to be happy. He was always happy to share whatever he had been blessed with.
Bert’s sheep and cattle operations depended on help from family over the years, and many remember the adventures they had with Bert while tending his sheep on Hunters Range, or hauling hay during the summer months.
Bert and Dolly’s home was always a welcome place to visit, or to stay for a while if you needed it, and many have memories of living with the family for a time. There was always room for one more!
In retirement Bert took up woodworking, and made many beautiful pieces of furniture, jewelry boxes, toy boxes, and so much more for all of his children’s and grandchildren’s homes, and for others. His projects were made to last a lifetime, often being very heavy, because bigger was better.
We will remember Bert for his quiet manner, his fun loving nature, his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and his strong faith in God. He will live on in us, in the smile of a grandchild, or a story that we have heard many times over. His was our hero, and we are proud and grateful to have had him for our Dad, Grandpa, and Papa!
A private gathering will be held in his honor.
