John Michael Lainsbury
June 25, 1937 – August 25, 2020
With love and sadness, we announce the passing of John Lainsbury. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, and boys, Greg, Jeff (Barb) and Duane Forrest (Kirsten), his grandsons Ezra and Miles, nephews James and Michael Grant. John arrived in Saskatchewan in 1947 from England with his parents and sister Pauline (deceased), settling on a small farm just outside Saskatoon city limits. He graduated with a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and moved his young family to Lanigan, where he undertook the position of town engineer, and helped develop the plan for this new city at the heart of Saskatchewan’s nascent potash industry.. John then attended UBC where he earned his Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Faculty of Applied Science. In 1968 he moved to Edmonton to join Stanley and Associates, where he worked on projects across western Canada. Vernon beckoned in 1977 and he spent his career contributing where he could to the growth of the City he loved. Working with the Topan Brown Gallery through its transition to the Caetani Cultural Center and Vernon Art Gallery and later seeing the work of The Ribbons of Green Committee develop into the Okanagan Rail Trail highlighted, in part, his desire to contribute to what he hoped was a shared vision of a liveable community. John was passionate about golf and curling. When his physical body failed him, he became an equally passionate member of the TSN viewing gallery. The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Don Smith and Jodey for their expert care, kindness and compassion over the years, The Vernon Jubilee Hospital Emergency Department staff for their attention and concern during times of crisis and the skills of Dr. Baker and the Kelowna Cardiac Unit. John would not have travelled this far without you. Pleasant Valley Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan.

Hi, Very sorry to hear this news. I worked with John at the City of Vernon many years ago and had other connections with him over the years. I always enjoyed that he referred to me a 'kid'. His professional outlook and ways of finding solutions made an impression on me and I still strive to do the same today. Great guy!
