In loving memory of Alan Lawrence Newton who passed away on April 10th, 2021 at the age of 92. Alan was born and raised in Hull, England. Alan joined the British Army and trained as an automotive mechanic. He was posted to Singapore and enjoyed his time spent there and his passion for riding motorcycles. After returning home and being demobilized he started work at Crystal Motors in Hull and continued his automotive apprenticeship and his motorcycle passion. He met and married Jean in Hull and they married in 1953 and had their first son Gary in 1955. With a growing family Alan looked for better opportunities and having an Aunt living in Calgary, Canada he thought that would be the place to go. He flew over to Calgary on a Flying Tiger flight in 1957 spending the night before sleeping in London Park.
Jean and Gary soon joined Alan in Calgary and they celebrated the birth of their second son Stephen in 1961. Alan remained working as an automotive mechanic at Stampede Motors but continued his training becoming a Heavy Duty Mechanic. He eventually started work at Canadian Freightways working on the diesels and trained on the refrigeration units in the transport trailers acquiring his Refrigeration Mechanic papers. They bought a home in Montgomery were Alan added an indoor bathroom and hand dug a basement to add two bedrooms. Jean remained unsettled in her adopted home and in 1969 the decision was made to sell everything in Calgary and the family returned home to Hull. After 7 months they realized that it was too difficult to resettle in Hull and the family returned to Calgary in 1970. Soon thereafter they all became Canadian citizens.
Alan had several jobs after returning to Calgary and continued his self-improvement acquiring his Building Operator and Fourth Class Steam Engineer papers while working in the Calgary City Hall maintaining the building HVAC system starting in 1977. He worked in this role during the New City Hall construction and commissioning, eventually retiring in 1994. In 1999 Alan and Jean moved to Victoria, BC with Stephen to enjoy the milder English like climate and ambiance of the James Bay area.
Alan was predeceased by his parents (England) Elizabeth & Lawrence and his sister (England) Madge and her husband Joe; and will be deeply missed by his wife Jean and two sons Gary and Stephen.
