Born May 27, 1930, in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, the fourth of five daughters born to Hilda and Frank B. Pearson, Alice grew up in White Rock and lived most of her adult life in the Point Grey neighbourhood of Vancouver. She trained and graduated from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing and worked for 7 years at St. Paul’s Hospital. Alice married John Whiting in 1958 and was widowed in 1986. She is survived and sorely missed by two daughters, Dr. Ann Giles and Clare Bolam, three grandchildren Darin Bolam, Katrina Bolam, and Samuel Burke, three great-grandchildren Jeriah, Naate, and Abigail Nicol, her faithful, loving sister Violet Ialungo, several nieces and nephews, and by her long-time friends Sheila Calvert and Anne Hand. Alice will be lovingly remembered for her quiet, gentle nature, her kind encouragement, and genuine interest in all our activities.
Alice enjoyed many interests including birding, the Jane Austen Society, folk dancing, needlework, travelling, and gardening. She delighted in the many birds and small creatures attracted to the backyard feeders she kept stocked. For several years, Alice was the President of the Mature Women’s Network where she met a group of lifelong friends. She also volunteered folding bulletins for the Unitarian Church of Vancouver for many years. Alice always looked forward to the Christmas lunch with the female members of her family each December and to the Family Picnic with the whole family every June in Stanley Park.
The family thanks Mary Pag Ang for her kind homecare of Alice for 2.5 years, and Linda Bagshaw for her faithful service over the past decade. Experiencing Altzheimer dementia, Alice lived at Haro Park for 3 years and the last 6 months at The Heights at Mount View care home in Victoria. Even late in life, she continued to consider others before herself.
While Alice did not want flowers, donations may be made instead to the Burns Bog Society or a similar charity whose work protects the wildlife she so loved. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
