Eileen Pumple was born in 1918 in Ottawa to parents Agnes and George Pumple. Eldest of four siblings Jack, Mary and George. Eileen graduated cum laude in 1940 from University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to University of Toronto for a graduate diploma in Social Sciences. She was full of adventure and self-confidence and truly cared about the welfare of others. It was this passion that led her into social work and to volunteer to go overseas. In 1945 at the age of 27 she joined the Canadian Red Cross to serve as an ambulance driver in war-torn London. Later that year, when the war was over, she joined UNRRA where she served as a welfare officer in various displaced persons assembly centers in Germany. She remained in Europe until 1949. Her career in social work gave her opportunities to see much of Canada. It was in 1963 while working in Whitehorse that she her husband Guy who was with the military. They shared a love of the outdoors and camping and saw a lot of Canada and the States with their fifth wheel trailer. From Whitehorse they were posted to Winnipeg and later to Brandon, Manitoba where she continued in the field of social work. Eileen and Guy moved to Vancouver Island in the early 70’s and settled in Saanich. Even in retirement, Eileen was an active member of her community. She worked for Welcome Wagon for many years. She also volunteered at Mount Newton, at Saanich Peninsula Hospital and was involved in the Catholic Women’s League and other charitable organisations. Eileen was very fortunate to be in the care of the wonderful staff at Saan Pen. In the 7 years she was a resident, she never had a complaint about life there. They truly seemed to enjoy her and appreciate her and we are forever thankful.
There will be a Funeral Mass October 24th at 10:00 at St Elizabeth Church, 10030 Third Street, Sidney followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Extended Care Services. Online sphf.ca/donate or 250-652-7531.
