Anna Marie Skadberg “Anna” was born in Sola, Norway, to Ole Grabriel and Anne Marie Stangeland. She had a happy childhood living in beautiful coastal Norway with her parents and her brother Trygve, despite having to live under the occupation of Nazi Germany during the Second World War. She grew into a graceful, confident and intelligent young woman and became a legal secretary. Young men of the area pursued her hand, but it was a confident young man named Per Skadberg who captured her heart and whom she married in 1962. Two children followed: Inger Marie (Marie) in 1963 and Harald in 1965. During these years Anna and her beloved family thrived on their family farm and seeing the country transform into a prosperous nation in Europe. Their home rang with the sounds of celebration where Anna served delicious, homemade Norwegian food. She was well known for her style, her strength, her cooking and baking.
In 1981 the family decided to make Canada their home and joined the vibrant Norwegian community in Victoria, British Columbia. They returned to Norway often and so remained close to relatives and friends there. Harald married and gave her three beautiful granddaughters: Amanda (1990), Heidi (1993), and Sarah (1995). Marie married and presented Anna and Per with a beloved grandson, Peter (1995). In 2024, great granddaughter Lennon came into her life.
Per unfortunately passed away in 2013 and Anna missed him dearly. But she knew she would see him again one fine day in heaven. And so, she has.
Anna’s daughter Marie cared for her needs, visited her daily. Harald also helped Anna with whatever she needed. Though a woman of few words, she expressed her love and devotion to her children and grandchildren through her actions and how she lived her life.
Anna passed of complications arising from a heart attack she suffered earlier in the week. She left this world truly at peace and without distress, surrounded by the family she adored. There is a void in the world where she once was.
Anna had a faith in God that helped her transcend every difficulty she met in her long and blessed life. She loved to listen to hymns and inspirational music and read her bible daily. Knowing that her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was always with her helped her to be strong and courageous but also to find joy. In her bible she wrote, “It will be worth it all when we see Jesus. What a day that will be.”
She loved to travel (especially to Hawaii), to shop til’ she dropped, to read, to listen to music, to visit with all her close friends, but most of all to spend time with her precious family. She was interested in others before herself, generous with time and finances, supportive of charities.
The family would like to thank everyone who sent condolences and messages of support, all her dear friends and relatives who never failed to stay connected with her, in Canada and in Norway. Special thanks to the staff at the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria BC who treated Anna with expert, loving care and concern in her final days. We are grateful for all of you.
As per Anna’s wishes, there will be no funeral, only a gathering of close family members.
“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in your book they were all written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them” Psalm 139: 16
