

Barb was born and grew up in Winnipeg where she attended University of Manitoba. In 1952 she graduated with a Bachelor Science in Agriculture winning the Gold Medal for her class. Barb married Al Chernick in
1953. She obtained her PhD in genetics in Edmonton. She and Al retired to Sooke. (Al died in the 1990's)
In Sooke, Barb joined the garden club, wrote a gardening column for the Sooke Mirror,sold cakes and pies, painted, created stained glass, joined the Unitarian Church and BCFTA. Barb was at the Cider Press as an Editor and a board member btwn 2004-2022, continuing to write until May 2024. Barb met Edo Nyland while living in Sooke, then moved to Sidney and married Edo. She was very happy..often saying that "I never thought I would fall in love again at 77 years old!!". (Edo died in Aug 2017)
Barb inspired those of us who were fortunate enough to spend time with her. Everyone will remember her with a great deal of respect, affection and love. Family left to mourn her are her nieces, Elaine Scrivener and Diana Chance, her nephews, Arthur and Robert Kennedy. Her Nyland Family, Freda, Heiko, Karen, Erik, Ian and Li-an. Also her Sooke Family and her 'Condo' Family.
We will all miss you Barb..you wise and wonderful, marvelous woman..and your streak of 'off the cuff' humour.
