It was a very sad day when we lost our friend Barry. Since the moment we met Barry we knew what a special man he was. We will cherish the moments we shared with Barry, playing golf, having sippies,dinners, etc. We will miss him. We are very happy and fortunate that he came into our lives.

My dear friend, I was so sad to hear of Barry's passing.  He was such a beautiful man, both inside and out.  I have never met such a gentle, caring and kind soul.  I knew there was something special about him in the gentle way that he looked at you and with a smile and a twinkle in his lovely blue eyes. He loved you with all his heart and soul. You two were just meant to be together even if only for a relatively short time  He will forever be a part of you and  watch over you from heaven. I promised Barry that I would always be there for you, Carolyn, and I will keep that promise.  I am walking beside you each and every day, and am only a phone call away.

Chris and I were deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, Barry. He was an extraordinary man whose primary mission in life was to be true to his values of caring for family and friends with kindness, warmth and honesty. Hi CT, I will always remember Barry's quiet sense of humour, he gave me many a chuckle. He was a kind and dignified gentle person, we are grateful he came into our lives albeit too short. Take strength in the knowledge that Barry is free of pain and suffering and at peace.

Dear Carolyn Michele told me the terribly sad news that Barry passed away. I am so, so sorry for your loss and send you my condolences andlots of love. Hi Carolyn I'm really, really  sorry to hear the news about Barry!  I know that nothing we say at this time takes the pain away, but just know that you are in our thoughts a lot.  I had a good cry when I heard the news from Mom.  Although I only met him once, he struck me as a very dignified nd good person, and these are the things you must keep close in your heart. Hi Barry this is a tough one for me, firstly let me start with the good stuff, thank you so much for the years, hours, minutes seconds that you devoted to Mom, you certainly added a whole lot of new experiences in her life (remember the life equation of 0+1) you made sure there were as few repeat experiences and generally a whole bunch of new 1's, thank you for supporting and confiding in her as she did you, always keeping a level head with proper solid advice, for the golf and the lawn bowls and the list could continue, a lot of the activities that I know she would not have tried under normal circumstances. (your relationship being far from normal probably swayed the vote) Thanks for assisting her in the IT challenge and thank you for all the IT that you have given me, both my i7 laptops function beautifully and the lap top bag (iNiT) appears to be stronger than the Samsonite one I got a few years before, at least I have not had to use surgical sutures to hold the handle on.  You really always seemed to be happy, level headed, and caring person, they type of person I call a friend, a friend that was always ready for a sippy or a smart comment, you really were a very special character, that I warmly and affectionately call my friend. Now the tough bit, life is unkind, they say you only live once, that;s  not true, you only die once, you have lived many good years and certainly in the few years I have knows you all I can say is THANK YOU so much, for everything, especially for all you did for Mom, God knows how much she is going to miss you, please know this "I got your back" thanks for getting all affairs (as far as possible) in order with Christiaan (a saint of sorts) and for you forward thinking an planning.  You really were one of the special souls when on earth that will be missed, gone but not forgotten.  So the hard part is Barry, I am saying farewell, go safe, travel well my friend and I know that we will meet again sometime, I will look for you "out there" and perhaps we can have a Rye in the sky in another realm, so this is not goodbye, that's too final, this is farewell my friend until we meet again. Dear Carolyn I am heartsick with the news of dear Barry's passing. I feel your pain and know your loss, but know to well that the grieving process will take a very long time and in truth it never really ends. Be gentle with yourself, let others help you and cry all you want or need. Sleep, eat and stay strong....you need to go forward from theis strengthening yourself wit all the good memories you shared.  Barry is at peace and his struggles are over...he was a lovely man who loved you very much and you were a source of strength for him through his final journey. How do you say good bye to the finest man you have ever known. We met 28 years ago and a finer gentleman does not walk this earth. He was so kind to his family, his friends and the people that he worked with at B C Tel (Telus).  There was never a person that did not have a kind word about him. If I ever had a problem I knew that I could always pick up the phone with a very complicated issue and in a few minutes Barry had broken it down to the basics and would solve it in very few words as he always did. 
He was always the quiet person that sat back and listened to everyone else. His heart was always open to everyone. There was no project that he would not step up to and deal with in his quiet manner. He was the type of man that was comfortable in any situation, be it living in Vancouver's West End, driving to Las Vegas in a snow storm, his very quirky sense of humor, dancing like Fred Astaire or just quietly playing with his grandchildren. Barry was always that wonderful kindest finest gentleman and my life will not be the same without him in it. I will have a sippy to you my friend. Carolyn you gave him more love and joy than any one man could handle and with you he was at his happiest. My love goes out to you at this very sad time.

I liked Barry from the moment I met him.  In reading his obituary I saw the man I knew all too briefly. Hi Carolyn I am not sure where to even start with how devasted I feel about not calling Barry.  I started many emails and picked up the phone numerous times, only to chicken out not knowing how to tell him all the things I wanted to say.  When I last talked to him after Shayne died, it was so heartbreaking and painful that I didn't know how to talk to him about his cancer, so shamefully I avoided it unable to deal with the idea of him losing the battle.  I suppose it was denial.  And not it is too late to tell him how sorry I am.  I wish I had the time to tell him all that I have been thinking and feeling.  Barry was such an amazing step dad to me growing up...being a single parent  have thought many times that I hope she is lucky enough to have someone like Barry to look up to.  He taught me so many great things...and planted the seed of my love for reading.  I am thankful for him 'making' us have movie nights with movies such as Shogun and others that we may not ever have watched....so many things and lessons taught by him will never be forgotten.  Even now, when I ever hear Zamfir, I immediately think of Barry.  The hours he spent at the ball park with me,...coaching my team even.  Road trips and great experience after experience always treating Christiaan and I as we were his own  He is the man that I grew up looking at as my Dad.  As the years went by, life passed and we lost touch... buy my feelings and love for him never went away.  From what I have been told.. you are an amazing woman and Barry has had the most joy in these past years with you.  Thank you for bringing him such happiness. My dear Barry, this is a tough letter to write dear friend. I would like to share some of my special memories and times with you.  My thoughts of when I think of you as you have to undergo something in your life none of us understands until the time approaches.  "Life has a strange way of sneaking up on us, when we think everything is okay..." It's hard to know what to say when life throws you a curve ball and you have no choice but to face it head on. I can't presume to know what you have been through and the byways you have had to navigate these past few months and weeks. Knowing you, I'm sure you have done this with your usual grace and honesty. What I do know for certain is that the love you brought to Carolyn and everyone you have touched in your life lasts forever.  It has mine and I affectionately call you a special friend.  I have so many wonderful memories you  when we first met, when you and Carolyn got married and the many times we all got together over the years to make those memories.  You fulfilled Carolyn's life thank you for that, for being such a solid rock and for making Carolyn so extremely happy from the day you met.You have meant everything and more to her.  I so admire you for your outlook on life, you are a true, honest, strong, level headed and very caring man.  Such wonderful memories I have of Gary and my wedding day, the good laughs we shared when you, Rob and Gary appeared in blue jeans, Gary's wedding suite having been left behind in Boise!  Gary valued as a true friend.  And I thank you particularly for being there for me after Gary passed. Some men truly stand out.  Sir Barry Courtright certainly did. Like a knight of old-world virtues, he practiced quite naturally the five values of Fellowship, Frankness, Courtesy, Compassion, and Purity of heart. From the first moment of our meeting he was warm and sincere and caring and authentic. In our private moments later, at lunches, or when visiting, Sir Barry never resorted to rancour or rudeness; he was a gentleman. A gentle man. And still, he called a spade a spade. He voiced concerns for our world. And wherever he could, he acted on his convictions. While a healthy man, he undertook making our apartment building entirely considerate for the disabled. He was the consummate care-giver, ensuring wherever he could that we all were more comfortable, that our investment in the infrastructure of our lives was more sound. He was active. As a member of The Council he was the go-to man. Anyone in our complex sought him out; he would take care of things; he would get things done! And still, he was gentle and warm and compassionate and he hugged without that male-bound-fear of being too soft. Men who've battled life do not fear being soft; they know just how hard when necessary they can be. And that was Sir Barry. He'd fought cancer before. And he'd won. But now? He understood that life is not a long battle of endurance but a journey of adventures, and for all of us it sometime must naturally end. Sir Barry, deep down knew that he must leave us. He did not succumb so much as accept with wisdom that time runs out.  And given his beleaguered and beautiful love of his life, Lady Carolyn, Sir Barry ensured that every detail of his leaving her behind would be taken care of.  His very last phone call to me was not about his pain, but about an insurance policy for his wife.  And as I put the phone down I knew I'd been talking to a Knight of Old, indeed.  All conversations end. And in our memories, the warmth and care and love they gave us, lingers on, is re-conjured. solet us remember Barry Courtright. With love, always.
