Margaret, Meghan, Sarah & Ian,

I worked with Brock in Port Alberni and was his watch commander when he retired in 2000. I vividly remember the end of his last shift when he came into my office and called into the Courtenay dispatch center on his radio and announced, "I'm 10-7 forever". My heart ached to see such a respected, beloved colleague leave us, but he was so excited to move on to new things.

And, indeed he did. Some time as a program manager at the detachment, then to Saanichton to rejuvenate the family property and enjoy the people he loved.

He self-published a few books that were a wonderful read, both because they were well written, and because they were an expression of his creative mind. He was creative in his carving, he was curious, and thoughtful of people and the world around him.

Brock was one of those guys that everyone appreciated, and left a lasting impression. It was a privilege to work with him, and to have him as a friend. He made a real difference in the community, and to all of us, and we share your loss in his passing .

Please accept our condolences. Our memories are brief but significant to us. We used to meet up with Brock and his friend in Centennial Park. Only good feelings transpired from these daily encounters. Interesting how it takes little evidence to confirm you have met a good person.

For many years my late husband, Don, and I worked with Brock at Port Alberni RCMP. Brock was Don's senior man much of that time and they were great friends. Brock's dry sense of humour and quick wit made him a favourite with the local residents who listened in on the police scanner for their entertainment. Brock never let them down with quick responses to various situations...none of which I will mention here!

So popular was Brock to the locals that one day he parked his patrol car downtown and was about to do a foot patrol when he heard "Constable Clayards!" He turned to see a "little old lady" running toward him. She had heard his radio call "14Bravo2 is 10-7 downtown on foot patrol" and wanted him to know a group of residents considered him their favourite officer and wished "the others wouldn't tease you so". Of course we did tease Brock but that was because he was such a character and so likeable - he took all teasing in stride. While Port Alberni Detachment was not considered "plum", we all made the very best of it and have lasting friendships as a result. We worked hard and played hard. I have the best of memories and Brock is a big part of them.

Brock - if you can hear me - I want you to know how very fond of you Don and I were and how much being in your life meant to us. You're on to your next adventure and I'm sure by now Don has grabbed hold of you to go for a 10-61...his favourite pastime where lots of "war stories" were shared...and embellished.

Big hugs, big fella. It was a pleasure knowing you! Save a spot for me, will ya?

Love, Barb

Brock and I worked on a watch together at Port Alberni RCMP. He was a close friend for over forty years and I shall miss him. Condolences to his family. Fond memories of our days together as peace officers in the RCMP.
