On September 29th, 2023, Danny George Ray took his last breath surrounded by his immediate family and so much love. The family's most heartfelt thank you goes out to all the staff at VIHA particularly the nurses and doctors at Victoria General Hospital who did everything in their power they could for Dad and supported the family every step of the way.
Born March 16, 1946, to Apha & George Ray in Vancouver BC, survived by his older brother Harry Ray, (Jackie) and nieces Michelle and Andrea. Danny leaves behind a lasting legacy in his children, Jordan (Andrea), Amber (Mike), and April, and his grandchildren, Dylan, Liam, Kara, Nathan, Henrik & Elsa. Married to the love of his life Maxine (nee Anderson) on March 17th, 1973, they created a home many only dream of. A house full of good food, good music, and an abundance of love for everyone in the Ray circle and beyond.
With an affinity for numbers and money, he worked in banking for some time and then spent 19 years working at the CRA where he would often get in trouble for being "too helpful" and received many thank you cards from the people he helped in their battle against the tax man. He retired at 60 ready to make the most of his time left and he sure did just that.
Danny was an avid golfer and at some points likely spent just as much time at the golf course as he did at home. After an unfortunate car accident took away his ability to golf, he started playing snooker at The Legion alongside his loyal friend since childhood Art Dusseault. Snooker quickly became the highlight of his week, and he would always regal anyone who would listen with how the game went. He never forgot a shot. Danny was an on-and-off again musician and picked up the guitar when he had grandchildren and we sure miss hearing him sing and play. He didn't think he was very good, but he was, and music was so intertwined into his very being you couldn't help but feel it when he played.
He never met a stranger and wouldn't let anything stand in the way of making new friends and sharing the pride he held for his family. Music and sports were a staple in his life, and he enjoyed many concerts with family and many hours ringside watching his grandkids play sports bursting with pride.
Dad was a hero in our family and beyond, but not in a big showy way. He never sought credit for his generosity and thoughtfulness, instead, he did it because he just didn't know any other way to be.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Esquimalt Gorge Park Pavilion on November 10th, 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, a charity near and dear to Dan's heart. www.vsac.ca
