

Dorothy Beatrice Lidstone, née Houghton, known as Dot by her many friends and relatives, passed away on February 2, 2026; at Glengarry Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 98. Born on November 30, 1927, in Verdun, Quebec, she lived a life defined by care, curiosity, and quiet strength.
Dorothy was the youngest child of six, and grew up in a nurturing Ottawa home, anchored lovingly by her mum, known to the rest of us as Nanny. Dorothy pursued nursing with dedication, earning her RN after training at Ottawa Civic Hospital. Her career in obstetrics and pediatrics spanned several institutions and provinces. She served at Ottawa Civic Hospital, Winnipeg Grace Hospital, and Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, where she worked in the premature nursery. She finalized her career as Head Nurse at Queen Alexandra Hospital for Children in Victoria. Her colleagues and patients alike remember her steady presence, meticulous care, and leadership.
She was predeceased by her husband, Irving Gordon Lidstone, and leaves behind an adoring family who cherished her deeply. Dorothy is survived by her children: Donald, Gordon (Patricia), Kathryn, and Richard (Marianne ). Her legacy includes grandchildren Gregory, Kristina, Natalie, Jesse, Steven, and Alex, and great-grandchildren Nathan, Blake, Colton, Marlie, and Cleo.
Dorothy was the daughter of Amy Elizabeth Houghton, née Woods, and Walter Henry Houghton. She was predeceased by siblings, Mabel Houghton, Richard Houghton, Diana Willoughby, née Houghton, Constance Houghton and Douglas Houghton.
Known as a supermum and an insatiable reader, Dorothy’s home was a place of warmth, learning, and steady encouragement. Her family remembers her as a patient mentor, a thoughtful listener, and a beacon of quiet dignity. She valued the joys of everyday life and found delight in books, conversations, and the solace of family gatherings.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her memory will live on in the stories she shared, the children she guided, and the countless lives touched by her care.
