OBITUARY
Douglas Payne
September 21, 1938 – February 21, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very special man on February 21, 2021. Douglas (Doug) aka Papa was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne on September 21, 1938.
Doug moved to Guernsey with his parents and sister in the late 1940s where he stayed until he joined the military. Doug served 2 years in the military in England and settled in Windsor where he met Elizabeth, the mother of his 2 children. Doug worked for the ICI Paint Company until he immigrated to Canada with his two kids in 1975. Doug did various jobs when he came to Canada, but none were more important than being a single parent to Craig and Sharon. Doug was a kind, patient, compassionate, humorous, humble and gentle man. To know Doug was to love Doug. Doug had strong family values.
Doug loved to be involved in his kid’s activities whether it be Sharon’s fastball or Craig’s running in various races around Victoria. Doug and Craig also participated in the Times Colonist 10k and the Goodlife Fitness 8k together for many years. Doug was an avid football (soccer) player in England and Canada. He loved to coach up and coming football players and share his passion for the game.
Doug could often be found at the Gorge Point Pub playing pool while enjoying a pint or in his later years at Spinnakers having a bowl of soup and a pint of beer. Doug loved spending time with his friend Greg going for walks and the IMAX. Doug spent many years in a bowling league with his sister Joan and eventually Sharon in his later years. Douglas also loved spending time with his nieces and sister in Guernsey. Douglas made several trips to the UK and Guernsey until 2015 when his Alzheimer’s made it impossible for him to go. Doug was very passionate about music and spent time listening to Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Phil Collins.
Doug is predeceased by his parents Frances and Reginald Payne and his niece Alison Duquemin. Doug is survived by his son Craig (Bernadette), daughter Sharon, grandchildren Isaac, Milo and Charlese, his sister Joan, various nieces, nephews and friends. There will be a memorial service at a later date when permitted. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia in Doug’s name.

Doug always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye, and a hug in his arms. And maybe a well timed sarcastic remark here and there, just to catch you off guard. A gentle, caring, funny man he was. My heart goes out to his family, who will miss him dearly. Only a person with so much love can leave such a big hole behind when he is gone.
