Ernie was a true Cockney, born within the sound of Bow Bells in London, England. One of eight children born to Lily and Charlie Brown, he distinguished himself early through his curiosity, kindness, and lifelong love of learning.
From a young age, Ernie had a deep affection for animals, especially birds. As a boy, he carefully assembled a collection of 67 birds’ eggs, conscientiously taking only one egg from each nest. At the age of eight, during the Second World War, he was evacuated to the English countryside. After several months apart, his parents chose to reunite the family, and Ernie returned to London, where he lived through the Blitz. During this time, he developed the remarkable ability to identify civilian and military aircraft by both sight and sound.
As a young man, Ernie discovered a passion and natural talent for dancing. He spent many joyful hours in British dance halls when he was not studying, working, or helping care for his younger siblings. After completing school, he joined the British Air Force, where his aptitude for mathematics and leadership was quickly recognized. These talents led him to train as a draftsman, setting the foundation for his future career.
At the age of 24, Ernie emigrated to Canada. He worked for a time in Ontario on the Avro Arrow aircraft project before eventually settling in Victoria, BC. There, he worked first for the Power Commission and later as a mechanical engineer and project manager with Kennametal of Canada, where he remained until his retirement.
Ernie was athletic and active throughout his life, enjoying soccer in his younger years and later taking up golf. He loved to laugh, socialize, and sing, blessed with a warm and expressive voice. These gifts—combined with his charm and dancing ability—earned him the affectionate family nickname, “Ernie Brown, the Toast of the Town.”
Above all else, Ernie will be remembered for his steady kindness and generosity of spirit. He was a devoted and loving father to Stephen (Sheila), Kristina, and Litzia (Kelt); a proud grandfather to Zosha, Kiah, Keaton, Kai, and Tessa; and a delighted great-grandfather to Remi. His family hopes that wherever he may be now, he is laughing, dancing, and singing to his heart’s content.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Rose Manor and Veterans Memorial Lodge for their exceptional compassion and care.
A private family service will be held. Those wishing to honour Ernie’s memory may make a donation to the Broadmead Care Foundation of British Columbia at www.broadmeadcare.com.
