Who am I?  My Dad and Trudy were cousins!  I remember Garry from when I was six and he was 22!  Garry and Gloria used to take me out for walks when they would visit to our house in Ontario.  I always used to say to him,  who you going to marry me or Gloria.  He was very sweet to my six year old heart,  He would always say he wasn’t sure.  Lmao!  I remember him telling me finally he was going to marry Gloria!  I was okay,.  He was a really cool guy.  I loved how his fingers tipped up at the ends, and him telling stories..cracked me up.
Garry bailed me out if some bad boy behaviour.  My Mum was Marian who he actually spent 30 ish years with.!  They were nuts.  Garry introduced my very proper Mother to aroma row at the Red Lion in Victoria.  God, they made me laugh.  They lived in my basement suite for a couple of years out in Langford.
One of my favourite memories was Garry getting super faced and my Mum bringing him upstairs.  I feed him some snacks and a cup of tea.  Course he fell asleep, that was a mistake.  I coloured his whole face with coloured felts.  My spouse Howie played golf with Garry until Garry passed.
Anyway,  Garry kept waking up through his felt pen experience and would say, thank you so much Katie for looking after me tonight, and I would hide the felt and say, “oh you’re most welcome Garry”.  Course I had to keep my Mum from laughing.
So off they go downstairs and I just say to her, try not to let him brush his teeth.  Along with Garry’s impeccable table manners, you will all remember him asking to leave your table… ya well brushing his teeth was included.  So I’m listening through the door and I hear him go, that damn Katie!  So I go to our. 5 kids, shit locks the doors, he has seen it.   Now the game is on…he found my weekest kid to let him in and then he went all over my house looking for me.  I howled when he looked under the couch cushions.
I came out of hiding, we laughed our asses off, hugged and laughed again.  I have a million of thos

I remember young Garry from our Bagotville days.  Nice fellow, pool rat in the days that I was lifeguarding.  Condolences to friends and family.  RIP Garry.  Peter Tranter

To me you were a Brother from another mother.  The laughter and tears we shared , the pride in our children and the gift of unconditional  friendship.  My heart is broken. My sincere condolences to the family.  Garry was a friend I treasured.  I love the photo of Paul and Garry as young lads.  The whole family was my second family at Uplands.  They are all in my thoughts often - very nice fond memories of the Heinekey family.
Garry used to take Teddy - the family dog - for a walk and ended up at my family home in time for the late night movie, when it was over he would head home.  Mr. Heinekey said one day to my Dad - Garry walks Teddy for hours on the weekend and he still puts on weight - meaning the dog.  Dad laughed and let it out of the bag that it was a mere 1 block walk they went on.  A memory to this day that makes me smile.

My dear Garry. I’m so going to miss your sweet and sometimes hilarious posts on my messages. We go way back some 66 years or so. I only wish I had made time to try and get together, but it just never happened. Well now you can help your Mom and my Mom hang the ”T” sign in the window. Make sure you leave it up and I will find you on my next journey. Love you 🌹💕. Posting an older picture of you and Paul. We didn't just share the same birthday.  As a child growing up, Garry indulged me and happily took on the role of a big brother.  He taught me the slickest karate moves, included me in all the old family drive-in movie nights and, as I got older, introduced me to the infamous humour of George Carlin.  Seems like so very, very long ago now.

But ...  fast forward 40 plus years.  We forget how much effort is required to maintain relationships and connections with people we love.  Life gets busy with kids, jobs, conflicting appointments and commitments .... the list goes on.  Suddenly, the promise "I'll call next week" becomes meaningless.   Oh, if only I had a crystal ball.

Myself, I am thankful that I was raised to believe that relationships don't end when someone is no longer physically with us.  We grieve for ourselves.  For our loss.  We grieve to induce the healing process that eventually comes with time.  Things we should have said can still be said, albeit in a quieter more private way now.  Things we should have done can still be done, having faith that we will feel pride of accomplishment despite our loss.

Garry, despite the figurative distance that has cropped up over the years, know that I will miss you.  For now.  Until we meet again.  In the meantime I count myself fortunate  knowing that each year on August 29th I can raise a glass to celebrate  us.  You may be gone, but will never be forgotten.

Garry was one of the finest friends a person could have. Always there for me from babysitting, moving, painting , traveling, to  taking my mom out golfing , or just throwing out chuckles in an email. 
We have been through thick and thin, from looking after our own parents to having fun times with our children.
I will miss him dearly, as he was my bro and I was his sis, need I say more!
Sheila, Shaun, Rob and family may the strength , love and compassion of your dad be part of who you are.

Garry accomplished a lot in his lifetime. As a teenager he did competitive swimming and diving. As a young adult, Garry was a lifeguard. He did karate, racquetball, hockey, curled, loved to ski and scuba dive. He proudly watched his children in sports. He was lucky the year he won a Datsun sports car from Hillside Mall. Once retired, Garry continued his love for tennis, golf and travel.  His 3 children proudly called him "dad" and cherished the good memories.

I am greatful  I had an opportunity to get out Fishing for a couple of days this past year with Gary. He has been a friend for more then 30 years, and I will miss his laughter and his facebook postings.
My condolences to the family.

Rather a shock to hear of Gary's death. I know he certainly loved and missed Marian.
