Chance encounters pattern our lives; their influence is not to be underestimated. I think Gary might have been surprised to learn how much his own character helped shape my life over the years, and regret never having had the chance to tell him so. I first met Gary in September 1968, introduced of course by Herb (everybody met everybody through Herbie back then). Re-entering the public school system that year, I was truly an outsider, badly in need of friends. The Johal brothers were the kind of friends we all need at that age, generous, warm-hearted, jovial, always welcoming. Gary could be fierce in appearance, and indeed was very fierce when required to be. But he always had your back, always took your side. And he was fair. He was a reliable friend when you needed one. Mind you, he was a terrible bike rider, taking way too many chances and going way too fast. On the outside of my left ankle there is a faint, dime-sized scar, a reminder never again to let Gary “double” me down Carey Road. I think of him every time I notice it. 

To the family, my most sincere condolences…I remember how tight you all are. Gary was truly one of a kind.
