

Born September 19, 1932 in Our Harbour, Newfoundland, and passed away peacefully at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital on March 8, 2017 with her daughter Lisa at her side.
Gail was predeceased by her loving husband James “Jim” Palmer, and survived by sons Douglas (Sandra) Heath of Victoria, Garry (Daisy) Heath of California, daughter Lisa (Ian) Gillis of Winnipeg; step-son James (Debra) Palmer of Chilliwack; grandchildren Samantha and Jennifer Palmer, Cara Heath, Bryan and Kathryn Gillis, Roy and Rosemary Heath; great-granddaughters Nevaeh, Kaia, Talia and Ariyah.
Gail grew up in a tiny fishing village off the south coastal town of Burgeo, in Newfoundland. She left home at the young age of 12 and worked as a servant until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force, while still in her teens. Gail served for 8 years at locations across Canada, as well as in England and France. While in France, Gail met and married her first husband, also a member of the RCAF. Their son, Douglas, was born in France a short time before they returned to Canada. In 1958, they settled in Melfort, Saskatchewan, and expanded their family with the births of Garry and later, Lisa. They entire family relocated to Victoria, BC in 1966.
Gail started her nursing career in 1970, as a newly single mother. The majority of her career was spent working at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, first at the Eric Martin Pavilion, then for many years in the Emergency department.
In 1972, Gail met Jim, the love of her life. They married in 1974 and resided in Gordon Head for 18 years before retiring to beautiful Brentwood Bay in 1992. They were active members of the Central Saanich Lawn Bowls Club and Central Saanich Seniors’ Centre. Gail loved lawn bowling and carpet bowling, Scottish country dancing, playing bridge and socializing with her many friends. She was a very active person who always loved to lend a hand.
A Celebration of Gail’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 2 p.m. at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Dr, Victoria BC V8Y 1B4
