

Hans Jurgen Epp was born in April 27, 1934 in Gadansk, then free City of Germany. He spent his early childhood in Poland and Berlin, living through the hardships and upheaval of the second world war- experiences that shaped his deep resilience, faith and compassions for others.
In 1952 Hans immigrated to Canada beginning a new chapter marked be determination and hope. He completed his high school in two years , then went on to study at Luther College, followed by seminary in Saskatoon where he graduated as a Lutheran Pastor and was ordained in 1962. His calling to ministry became the guiding thread of his life’s work.
Hans faithfully served congregations across Canada, including Togo, Saskatchewan; Moosehorn and Morden, Manitoba; Medicine Hat Alberta; Kelowna, British Columbia; Barrhead Alberta and finally Victoria, British Columbia. In each community he was known for his thoughtful preaching, gentle pastoral care and steadfast commitment to his faith and the people he served.
He shared 67 loving years of marriage with his wife Vera, a partnership marked by devotion, mutual support and shared faith. Together they raised a family that remained at the heart of his life. Hans is survived by his wife Vera, their children: David and wife Meghan and their children Darian, Julian, Devon and Finn; Susan and her husband Jonathan and their daughters Chelsie and Melissa; and Deborah and her partner Clive and their children Gabriel and Olivia. Also by his two sisters Christiana and Peter Duschinsky and Corrie and husband Douglas Stuart. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth and her husband Wilfred Hein
In later years in Victoria Hans found great joy in the natural beauty of the west coast. He especially enjoyed canoeing and hiking, activities that reflected his lifelong appreciation for nature, reflection, and quiet adventure.
Hans will be remembered as a devoted pastor, a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a man whose life was grounded in faith, service and gratitude. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 3787 Cedar Hill Road, Victoria, British Columbia, on March 4, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
