It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Harold Walter Neufeld, aged 83, on January 7, 2024, in Victoria, BC. Harry, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to his family. He will be remembered as a quiet, strong man, a proud father, and a loving grandpa who had a wonderful, wry sense of humour.
Harry is preceded in death by his common-law wife, Lynne Travers, his older sister, Louise, and his younger brother, Jim. He is survived by his two sons, David and Michael, from his first marriage to Lynne (nee Grainger), as well as his grandchildren Elise, Nadine, Evelyn, Anya, Naia, and Mateo.
Harry was born in Saint Albert, Saskatchewan to Gertrude (Cancellor) and Henry Neufeld. The family moved to Victoria when Harry was four, when his father left for the war in Europe. Harry often spoke fondly of his Nanna and older sister Louise, who played vital roles in his upbringing during that time.
Harry attended SJ Willis High School. He would later say he “loved” school but left at the age of 15 to enter the trades. He quickly advanced to lead crews and eventually took ownership of Pacific Floors, earning a reputation for his physical strength, skilled workmanship, and unwavering work ethic.
In 1971, Harry and his family moved to Cordova Bay, where he lived until April 2023. Following the dissolution of his first marriage, Harry became a single father (rare for the time) and raised his teenage sons with a quiet dedication. His respect for education, passion for reading, and love of history and science made him a great conversationalist.
In 1990, Harry rekindled a romance with Lynne Travers, and their love endured until her passing in August 2022. The couple made many memorable road trips through coastal Washington, Oregon, and California, as well as Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. They also explored Vancouver Island in their motorhome, with Parksville being a favourite destination.
After Lynne's sudden passing, Harry remained fiercely independent until he transitioned to long-term care. On January 7, 2024, Harry left this world peacefully.
The family expresses heartfelt appreciation for the care provided by the nurses and clinicians at Sydney Allcare and Saanich Peninsula Hospital throughout 2023.
Dad, your strength and quiet love will be forever missed. May you rest in peace, and may we all laugh together again when the time is right.
