Isobel passed away on August 11 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, after a sudden illness. Isobel Mary Assad was born to Jean (Bissett) and Arthur Zinger, in Swan River, Manitoba in 1932, the eldest of 6. She reminisced about going to school in Flin Flon riding on the handle bars of her fathers bicycle and getting her first tooth brush at 12. Isobel had a beautiful smile. She attended St Michael’s Nursing School in Toronto, where she caught the keen eye of Bill Assad a U of T student grabbing a cheap meal in the hospital cafeteria. They married and together raised Janyce, Will and Chris largely in Ottawa. Isobel’s nursing career began in Sudbury and continued in Ottawa where she taught at CEGEP and after she graduated with her BScN from University of Victoria in 1983, and finished at the Glengarry Hospital. A desire for a milder climate and with children having finished university, Isobel and Bill moved to Victoria BC in 1981. Following the premature passing of Bill in 1992, she found companionship with with Peter Bazowski. Together they laughed, loved and travelled the world. Dave & Charlene, Dan & Jean accepted her into their family and they were part of hers. After Peter’s passing, Isobel continued to find joy in the friendship of her condominium, dedicated to delivering newspapers and sharing her irresistible baked treats.
To the end she was the best friend to her daughter and guardian angel Janyce. Together they shared the splendours of Victoria, exchanged each other’s cuisine and their extended cat family. Isobel was beautiful, witty and always stylish. She will be missed, always loved and never forgotten by children Janyce, Will (Shirley Lee), and Chris (Lori Stewart); grandchildren Audrey, Stephanie, Will and Louis; step grand-daughers Rosalynd & Margo Ronson and their families; siblings Ethel Sabourin (Keith), Jean Juhas (Mike), and Frank (Rollie); and the families of her late sister Lorraine and brother Jim.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
