Joan Marion Nicoll

Joan Marion Nicoll nee Smith passed away on March 10, 2025 at the age of 89. Joan was born in Central Butte, Sask and grew up on the family farm in Green Prairie School District, the second child of her father Donald Malcolm Smith, and mother Violet Frances Smith, both deceased. Joan is also predeceased by her older sister Kay who passed away on February 27, 2009 at the age of 76.

Joan is survived by her brother Robert Harlan Smith, Robert’s wife Chris Nielsen-Smith and his ex-wife Elaine Smith, as well as her nieces Teresa Andries, Sharlene Smith, Shelley Duchene, Deborah Froud and Cody Morash, and nephew Robert Smith, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. Joan was also predeceased by her husband Jimmy Nicoll, and is survived by many caring members of the Nicoll Family from her husband’s first family – Michael Yahgulanaas Nicoll, Jim Nicoll, Brenda Bridgway, Jennifer Donnelly, Carole Nicoll and Maggie Brough, as well as close family friends Peter Loy, Bruce Loy and Christopher Loy.

Joan spent the majority of her professional life as a nurse on Vancouver Island in Prince Rupert looking after Native children and families on the many reservations. Joan will be cremated and her ashes spread over the family cemetery in Central Butte/Green Prairie, Saskatchewan.
