Joan Morrison was born on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, where she graduated from the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway before studying at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, specializing in sculpture. In 1958 she married John Noble at the beautiful King’s College Chapel. They had two sons, John and Donald, and in 1966 they embarked on their greatest adventure, emigrating by ship and train across the world to Vancouver Island.
Joan was a lover of Gaelic songs, and sang with the Aberdeen Gaelic Choir prior to their departure for Canada. She was a lover of art and books, classical music and history. In Victoria, she enrolled in classes at the University in order to have access to the university library, and went on to earn a Master’s Degree, eventually becoming a popular lecturer in the English Department. For a few years she also taught evening classes in Gaelic language and literature, publishing an accompanying book and tape. She was fascinated with the history of Scotland and published several articles based on her original research into the life of Marie de Guise.
Joan was surrounded and supported by a circle of extraordinary friends. She was a gifted and delightful storyteller and conversationalist who somehow made everyone else feel that they were the star of the show.
Joan was by her beloved husband John’s side for 66 years and missed his company every day after he died. She leaves behind her son John and daughter-in-law Melody and their two boys Donald Morrison and James Odin, and her son Donald and daughter-in-law Laurie. She grieved the loss of her grandson, John Todd “JT” Noble, but carried his memory in her heart.
