John Arthur Edge passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Royal Jubilee Hospital. He was predeceased by Jessie, his wife of 71 years, in 2021. He is survived by his daughter Linda St. Pierre (Guy), sons, Gary (Jeanette) and Michael (Lily), as well as four grandchildren Christina (Mike), Renee(Kevin), Courtney(Scott) and Garnett (Esmee), and six great grand-children He is also survived by nieces Maureen Taylor, Kathleen Edge, Donna Kouwenhoven and husband Hans, and their children Katrina and Kristine.
Born and raised in Victoria, he was the youngest of five children. Aside from a few years in Penticton, he spent his entire life here, raising his family and being active in his community.
Hunting and fishing occupied much of his early years before spending a brief time in the army in 1945. In 1950 he married his lifelong partner, Jessie. They were happily married for 71 years before Jessie’s passing in 2021. In 1954, he built a house in the Cadboro Bay area and remained there with Jessie for the rest of his life, only moving to an independent living at the Victorian in Dec 2025.
Over the years, John was active with several community organizations. He spent time coaching both juvenile baseball and soccer teams. During the 1960’s and 1970’s he was an avid participant in the Wednesday Night Men’s Commercial Bowling League, which operated out of the old Mayfair Lanes. He won numerous trophies, including a provincial championship, and served as the League’s President. After almost 30 years working for the federal government in the naval dockyards in Esquimalt, John retired in 1986. In his retirement, his love for fishing continued as a member of the Victoria Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club. He served as its President for several years in the 1980’s. He could also be found volunteering at the local fish hatchery.
Often self-taught, John enjoyed additional hobbies over the years. He was an avid reader, lover of fly fishing tying his own flies, bridge player, and solver of crossword puzzles. This knowledge, coupled with his easy-going personality, humour, and love of good conversation, made him well liked wherever he went.
John and Jessie enjoyed traveling in their retirement. Several trips to Europe followed along with a cross-country trip in their truck and camper in 1987. With his favorite boat in tow, they continued to enjoy endless camping and fishing trips around Vancouver Island.
In his later years, John spent a decade committed to caring for his aging wife. He was well known and beloved within his neighborhood. He could always be seen, every morning, walking his dog Koby.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the Doctors and Staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for the care he received as well as the Care workers from Home Instead and Luxcare who made it possible from him to live independently which meant so much to him.
