Jack grew up on a farm in southern Ontario with a brother and four sisters. At the age of 17 he moved to Quadra Island where he finished high school and earned money for university as a fisherman. During this time he made deep life-long bonds with the Cape Mudge Band (We Wai Kai Nation). With a new wife, baby and Bachelor of Divinity degree he began his 34 years of service with the United Church of Canada as a pastoral minister, then later as a Presbytery and Conference minister. Along the way he greatly enjoyed the work he did as a sensitivity/group development trainer with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups.
Family life, with the addition of two more children, became more adventurous with experiences of communal living and attempts at creating a back-to-the-earth intentional community. He was a man of many skills and particularly enjoyed building the family a log home in Prince George as well as a post-and-beam house on Vancouver Island.
Throughout his life Jack was a man of deep faith, compassion, patience, grace and humour. He is remembered and much loved by many, especially his wife, Elaine, sons, Greg and David, daughter, Jennifer, son-in-law, David, grandsons, James, Eric and Daniel, and many nieces and nephews from coast to coast.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held when it's safe for family and friends to gather together to tell stories, hug, laugh and sing. Donations in his name can be made to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service.
